When and how did your connection with UE begin?
I was the Dean of the College of Law at Stetson University and the Provost that hired me to be the dean became the President of Capital University in Ohio. She picked up the phone one day to tell me that the University of Evansville was looking for a President and she thought I would be a very good fit. She nominated me for the position and let me know that the search firm was going to call me and “I should talk with them if I was remotely interested.” They called and asked if I had 10 minutes to talk about UE. I agreed. They asked if I had 30 minutes the next day to talk some more. I agreed. A week later, they next called and asked if I would be willing to fly to Indianapolis to meet with the Search Committee the following week. I agreed. A few days later, they called and asked if Siobhan and I would fly to campus to meet with the Search Committee and some members of the University and community. It was all confidential and I remember Siobhan and I taking a tour of campus at night with Kenton Hargis to maintain the confidentially. As we left campus to fly home, I remember Siobhan asking what I thought – my response: I grew up in Scranton and Evansville felt like home. Linda White, the Chair of the University Board of Trustees called a few days later and I became the 24th President of the University of Evansville. The whole process was about six weeks – and we are so glad we became part of the UE and the Evansville community.
What impact has UE had on you or on people you know?
Evansville has been so welcoming to our family. When we moved to UE, Ryan was 12 years old and John was 8 – and they grew up being part of a college community. Ryan is now a freshman in college and I recall walking between Olmsted and Ridgway one day when Ryan was a junior in high school and saying – Dad, I feel like I lived on a college campus for the last four years, I am ready for college.
John became who he is in a big way because of UE. When I first arrived, I decided to send a video message to the campus community every Friday – 2 or 3 minutes -- called the Purple Friday Wrap, which had no production components. I would walk around campus on a Friday and make a video message with my iPhone and a $10 Amazon tripod to hold my phone. I persuaded John to be in one of my first Purple Friday Wraps as a very shy 8-year-old. We sent it out to the campus on a Friday and John and I walked from Olmsted to Carson Center the following Monday and literally 15 people stopped John to tell him that they loved him in Friday Wrap. His confidence soared. He was in lots of subsequent Friday Wraps and our Theatre Department would have a watch party every Friday to see if he made a Purple Friday Wrap appearance. Pretty cool impact that UE made on John, now as a high school freshman.
Why do you invest your precious time, expertise, and resources into supporting and furthering the University of Evansville and its mission?
I love our mission – eighteen words define who were are and those words came in 2019 when more than 150 faculty, staff, and students – those that love the University – were so thoughtful in thinking about who we have been over the last 170 years and who we want to be in the future – “to empower each student to think critically, act bravely, serve responsibly, and live meaningfully in a changing world.”
We live our mission in so many ways by making a difference in the lives of people. For example, UE was awarded a historic $30 million Promise Neighborhood grant from the United States Department of Education, with a total investment of $62 million including matching funds. The grant was one of only three awarded in the country in 2023 and the only one awarded to a university and a city working together – and we are addressing generational poverty. Big, transformative initiatives are what makes a difference and shows what a college can do and demonstrates to our students that they also have a responsibility of making our communities better.
College today has to be much more than a degree – college prepares students for an ever-changing world and we meet those challenges by bringing academic to life through real world internships, more hands on learning experience, and taking a Change Lab course so that students can follow their passion – and make a difference. Everyday, we are re-define the value of a college education by taking knowledge and turning it into action.
What inspired you to pursue a leadership role in higher education, and specifically at UE?
I practiced law for a decade in Washington DC including at the United States Department of Justice and began teaching as an adjunct law professor at the George Mason University School of Law. That was the first time I saw first-hand the power of education and what it could do in the lives of people. So, I became a law professor and spent 12 years teaching. The experience was an even better way to help students understand that in addition to joining a great profession, they also had the ability as lawyers to dramatically influence other people by serving on boards, volunteering their time to those that needed help, representing community members in a law clinic to further understand our responsibility in our communities. Gradually, I began to believe that a leadership role has an even greater way to influence how colleges – and the many people that are part of them – could change the trajectory of a person, a family, and a community.
The University of Evansville fit my beliefs and what I think is important – higher education is changing and colleges, in order to make a difference, had to be distinctive in some important ways. At UE, there are two distinctives that I thought made a difference. First is Harlaxton College, considered the #1 study abroad program in the United States and second, the belief that the UE can change lives and change the world. It started through ChangeLab courses. Project based learning over 15 weeks that change our community, our region, our state, or in some cases, the world – like developing anti-bullying board games to water filtration systems in the Phillipines and everything in between – and now we have an Evansville Promise Neighborhood that will address generational poverty for nearly 20% of our Vanderburgh County population. And, there is much more to come.
How do you personally connect with UE’s mission, and how does that shape your leadership approach?
I love being at a place where my responsibility is to connect people and tap into their passion, providing a place where students can learn and grow. Jim Valvano’s famous 1993 speech at the ESPYs says you are going to have something special if you do three things everyday -- you laugh, you think, and you cry every day. For a University, if you can do four things while students are with you, you have something special -- to think critically, act bravely, serve responsibly, and live meaningfully in a changing world. If our students live our mission – and if we live our mission our students will be ready for the world because they became ready while they were here. They can change lives and change the world – for themselves, for their families, and for their communities.
